What is WASCA?
The Washington Area Square Dancers Cooperative Association, WASCA, is a cooperative association of dance clubs in the greater Washington, DC area joined together in the common interest and general support of "dancer" activities. WASCA sponsors the best dance festival on the East Coast on the third weekend of each March. This 3 day "Friendship Set to Music" party regularly attracts over 1,000 dancers from all over the Nation. Click WASCA Spring Festival for details.
WASCA produces a publication, Calls'n'Cues, for their members' dancers giving them the opportunity to communicate what each club is doing and who is doing it. Dance information and special articles about Round and Square Dancing are included.
The greater Washington DC area has about 75 dance clubs with thousands of dancers. The WASCA Member Clubs area encompasses parts of four states: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Dancing occurs at all levels every day of the week. You will be able to dance somewhere in the area. Square and Round Dance Lessons & Demos (including workshops & exhibitions) are taught year round in the area. Contra and clogging are taught too!
WASCA cooperates with the activities of the National Capital Area Square Dance Leaders Association (NCASDLA) and the Round Dance Teachers Association (RDTA) in providing publicity and other assistance to promote Square and Round Dancing and to assist clubs. WASCA member clubs and the WASCA board members have been active in setting up parades, demonstrations, and other activities to promote dancing and clubs in our area.
WASCA also purchases a group insurance policy providing liability coverage for its Member Clubs to cover potential damage to facilities where they meet. WASCA has also developed a Promotional Fund Program to provide financial support to WASCA Member Clubs and Club sponsored dances that are in financial need.
